Jack Chain For Hanging Speakers, Light Fixtures, Signs And More

jack chain and s hooks for hangingJack chain is a great option for many installs.  The most common use for jack chain that we are seeing is for speakers used in sound masking and paging applications, light fixtures and signs.  However the list is endless of what you can hang with jack chain.  While grid wire maybe less expensive than jack chain,  the results many times simply aren’t as appealing.  Chain is easier to ship and usually comes in a 100′ box or spool that you can cut to desired length on the fly.  A good quality side cutter or a lineman’s pliers should do the job.  #12 is one of the more common sizes of jack chain and it is typically rated for 30 lbs or so.  Most speakers, signs and fixtures fall well below that and usually have more than one mounting point so it is a good choice.  Larger gauges are available as is stainless steel.

An easy way to attach your jack chain to the fixture is with simple “S” hooks.  There are many anchoring options for jack chain depending on your ceiling.  You will find hammer on clamps, bar joist clips, purlin clips, concrete anchors and eye lag screws that will all make for an easy install when used along with an “S” hook.  Many of these fasteners can be installed to the ceiling from the floor using a pole tool.  Once you attach the “S” hook to your jack chain, pinch the “S” shut with a pliers and you are set.  That line pliers we mentioned earlier would be handy now wouldn’t it!

Jack chain is one of those handy little items that you will definitely find a use for on the job and around the home.  Don’t forget to keep a supply of “S” hooks on hand as well to make you installation fast and easy.  Check us out at ConstructionFastening.Net for jack chain and a wide variety of specialty tools and fasteners for the trade including data comm, low voltage, electrical, security, signage, mechanical and more!
